More organic fertilizer, urea sought for potato cultivation

Over 120 farmer families in the Waligepola Agricultural Divisional Secretariat area in the Ratnapura District request Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage to take prompt action to provide them with adequate organic fertilizer and urea for potato cultivation.

The framers are complaining that they cannot cultivate potato with organic fertilizer only.

Weligepola Farmers Association Member N.S. Sumanasiri said that during this year, Agriculture Authorities of the area distributed a new potato variety.

He said that all farmers cultivated the new variety and reaped a good harvest since they were provided with adequate fertilizer and urea, which is the main substance needed to cultivate potato.

“But potato farmers are now reluctant to cultivate their lands since they cannot get adequate organic fertilizer and urea,” he said.

He said that urea is needed for potato cultivation. Otherwise half-grown potatoes will be ruined by insects and pests, he said.

He said that chemical fertilizer imports will be stopped from next year and the farmers will not cultivate since they need urea to get a potato harvest.

Weligepola has also been selected by the Agriculture Department to cultivate potatoes.

“Under these circumstances, the farmers asked the Agriculture Minister and other relevant officers in the Ratnapura District to intervene in this matter and provide them with adequate organic fertilizer to continue the potato cultivation,” he said.
