PM commends shifting of Welikada Magazine Prison

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa commended the shifting of the Welikada Magazine Prison to Millewa in Horana and said this State-of the-art new Prison Complex will benefit all prison inmates including female prisoners who are serving jail terms along with their children.

Prime Minister Rajapaksa made these remarks via Zoom technology from Temple Trees. The construction work of the new Prison complex will be completed in 2024.

He said the duty of the Government is to provide adequate welfare facilities to the children of female prison inmates. He said special security arrangements and welfare facilities will be provided to develop the needs of the children of female prisoners.

“I have already advised the Prisons Commissioner General and relevant authorities in the Prison Department to provide adequate facilities including the establishment of a Day Care Centre for the children of female prison inmates,” the Prime Minister said.

Prime Minister Rajapaksa further said such children will be provided with a better educational background to enable them to improve their talents and educational activities. They will be allowed to use the latest technologies as those would be important for them when they mingle with all other children one day.
