A committee will be appointed to investigate the illegal leasing and seizure of more than 200 plots of land belonging to the Janatha Estate Development Board and prepare a report on the issue.

During a discussion at the Agriculture Ministry yesterday (9) under the patronage of Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, it was revealed that more than 100,000 acres have been illegally distributed. Some lands had been leased out during the previous government due to political affiliations and some former politicians had received lands in this manner.

Minister Aluthgamage has instructed the Secretary to the Ministry Prof. J.M.Udith K. Jayasinghe to appoint an expert committee to look into the matter and submit a report within a month as the Government has lost a huge amount of money due to the fraud.

After submitting the report, a Presidential Commission will be appointed to inquire into the report and to take legal action in accordance with its recommendations.

Janatha Estate Development Board Chairman Buwanaka D. Abeysuriya and few other officials were present at the meeting.
