Navy nabs two suspects with smuggled dried turmeric

Naval personnel seized 1,172kg of smuggled dried turmeric on a dinghy in seas off Sawaripuram, Silawathura yesterday morning and nabbed two suspects.

A team of Special Boat Squadron (SBS) from the Naval Ship (SLNS) Therapuththa in the Northwestern Naval Command intercepted a dinghy off ashore in the Sawaripuram sea area and found about 679kg of smuggled dried turmeric in 18 sacks on it. Two suspects were also nabbed.

Thirteen more sacks of dried turmeric (493kg) were also seized later..

The suspects are residents of Sawaripuram, Silawathura. The dried turmeric, the dinghy and the suspects were handed over to the Silawathura Police.
