The Inspector General (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne said those involved in the Easter Sunday terror attacks will be able to creep through the law’s loopholes and escape punishment, if the investigations are not done properly.
Commenting on the Easter Sunday terror attack investigations he said that although the police can arrest persons alleged to be involved in the incident, if the investigations are not done properly, those involved will be able to creep through the loopholes of the law and escape punishment.
Defence Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne commenting on the allegations made by the Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said that while several persons have been arrested so far, the evidence should be gathered properly to ensure that those responsible do not escape due to certain weak points in the evidence.
He said that the reasons for the delay in punishing those responsible had been explained to the Bishops earlier (at which the Cardinal was not present) and also to the Chief Prelates at a meeting held at Temple Trees. “We can simply arrest those responsible based on what we have gathered so far, but, in a Court of Law, unless the case against them can be proved without any doubt, these criminals will escape. It is understandable that the Cardinal wants justice. So do we, but these investigations must be done comprehensively in order to ensure that those responsible do not get away due to minor discrepancies or insufficient proof. This is a process that has to be done meticulously without leaving any room for even minor mistakes,” he added. Meanwhile, the IGP urged the public to provide information to the police regarding criminal or illegal activities without fear so that the police could follow these leads and nab criminals engaging in illegal or anti-social activities.
