Tharindi Welagedara the athletic star of Mahamaya

Nineteen year old, Tharindi Kaveesha Nethmi Welagedara, a Grade Twelve student of Mahamaya Girls School, Kandy in the Commerce stream is an outstanding Athlete . She started her Athletic career in 2013 under the coaching of Janz Dissanayake, a former outstanding Athlete cum Coach attached to the Ministry of Sports. Tharindi became the Under 13 Champion winning 100 and 200 metres and Long Jump at the School Athletic Meet in 2015 representing Sangamitta House and in the same year she competed at the Sir John TarbetJ unior Athletic Meet and won Merit Awards for 100 and 200 metre races. In 2016 she was a member in the Under 14 School 4 x 100 Relay team which secured the third place at the Sir John Tarbet Junior Athletic Meet, placed Second at the Kandy District Athletic meet and the Relay team consisted of Tharindi, Sithumini, Nethmi and Umasha. In 2017 she continued her winning spree by securing third place in the 100 metre race but came first at the 4x100 Relay event and won merit awards for the same events including the Relay team.

In the year 2018 she was in the winning 4 x 100 Relay team at the Kandy District Sports Meet and she was unable to win any individual events in that year but in 2019 she was placed second in the 200 metre race at the District meet and at the Zonal meet too she came second in the 200 meter race. She was a member of the 4 x 100 metre winning Relay team establishing a new Meet Record of 52.95 secds. and in the same year she

was in the winning Medley Relay team. Tharindi became the Champion Athlete in athletic competitions in all age groups i.e. 13,15,16 and 18 at the School Sports Meets held annually and she is thankful to her Coach as well as her Class teachers for releasing her for Athletic practices.

Tharindi’s intention is to improve Athletics after leaving School to be a National Level Athlete and her future ambition is to excel in her studies as well to become a Chartered Accountant.
