Millawa Prison Complex to cost Rs.30 b - State Minister

The new Prison Complex at Millawa, Horana will be constructed at a cost of Rs.30 billion, Urban Development, Coast Conservation, Waste Disposal and Public Sanitation State Minister Nalaka Godahewa said.

Minister Godahewa was speaking at a ceremony held at Temple Trees under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.The ceremony was aimed at making the public aware about the proposed new Prison Complex and also the shifting of the Welikada Magazine Prison to a new location.

Construction work on the new Prison Complex which is being constructed on a 200 acre land at Millawa, Horana will be completed in 2024.

State Minister Godahewa said the Government wants to shift the present Prison building from a densely populated area in Colombo to a quiet environment.

He said the land where the Welikada Prison is located will now be utilised to construct a hotel complex and the Prison Head Quarters, while 35 acres will be allocated for investors.

Godahewa also said the Prison Complex at Horana is constructed in a plantation area and 123 plantation workers will be provided compensation for being relocated. Fifty seven houses have already been constructed for them.

He further said the President has instructed the Prison Commissioner General to provide facilities to establish a Day Care Centre for children of female prison inmates. He said such children will be provided a better educational back ground to enable them to improve their inborn talents and nurture their educational activities.
