Steps have been taken to eliminate blue-green algae in drinking water sources, which cause kidney diseases, mainly in the North Central Province.

The Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa Districts have recorded over 50,000 kidney patients where blue-green algae are rampant in drinking water resources and many more kidney patients have now been detected in other districts as well because of the same cause.

Therefore, a research project funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Research Council of the United Kingdom, a joint agreement between the University of Robert Gordon in the United Kingdom and the Preadeniya and the Jayewardenapura Universities in Sri Lanka will be signed in the near future in this regard.
