The Chinese Embassy in Colombo yesterday gifted a consignment of face masks and ventilators for the anti-COVID-19 campaign initiated by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to mark its 70th anniversary. Party Chairman and former President Maithripala Sirisena, State Minister and SLFP Treasurer Lasantha Alagiyawanna accepted them.

Construction of the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Addalaichenai Divisional Hospital was completed months ago but it has not been opened yet for the public. Batticaloa Police nabbed 99 persons for breaching travel restrictions and opening their shops in Batticaloa yesterday. Of them, 17 have tested positive for COVID-19. They are residents of Station Road, Bar Road, Koolavady and Koddaimunai. Picture by Sivam Packiyanathan, Batticaloa Special Corr.

UN Resident Coordinator Hanaa Singer-Hamdy paid a courtesy call on Justice Minister Ali Sabry, PC, at the Ministry. Law reforms, resolving the law’s delays and issues related to the prisons systems were discussed at this meeting. UN assistance for the rehabilitation of imprisoned drug addicts was also discussed. Private Secretary to the Justice Minister Attorney-at-Law Janaka Ranathunga was also present.

The tusker named 'Bhanu' which was roaming free at the Ridiyagama Safari Park in Hambanthota since September 2019 was returned to the Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya yesterday (14) in keeping with a court order. The tusker was handed over to the custody of the Department of National Zoological Gardens and was kept at the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage until it was transferred to the Ridiyagama Safari Park.
