Timor-Leste, Sri Lanka to establish diplomatic relations

The Timor-Leste (East Timor) Government has shown interest in establishing diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka, Co-cabinet Spokesman, Plantation Minister Dr Ramesh Pathirana said

The Minister was addressing the weekly Cabinet media briefing yesterday at the Government Information Department.

He said that establishing diplomatic relations with East Timor is important to obtain economic and political support.

A number of Asian countries including India, China, Japan and South Korea have already established diplomatic relations with East Timor, the Minister said.

The Cabinet, therefore, has granted consent to the proposal by Foreign Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris in this regard.
