Catholic Church wants IGP to probe Thera’s claims

The Catholic Church has requested the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into claims made by Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera regarding a plan on another extremist attack in the country.

Catholic Church’s Communication Director Rev. Cyril Gamini said the statement made by Ven. Gnanasara Thera directly  impacts on the country’s national security and the security of the citizens and therefore, it cannot be underestimated or ignored.

He further said that they believe that this statement made by a prominent monk such as Ven. Gnanasara Thera during a programme aired on a television channel is made responsibly.

Fr. Rev.Gamini said the Thera had claimed to have conveyed the details to the President, and questioned whether the President informed the relevant authorities, what investigations if any have been carried out and whether arrests in this regard have been made.

He also said that it is the responsibility of the IGP to conduct an impartial investigation into these claims and based on the outcome of these investigations, to take all possible measures to avert such an attack and arrest those involved as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, responding to claims made by the Ven.Gnanasara Thera that he had met the Cardinal in 2017 and warned him about a possible attack on the Catholic church, Rev. Fr. Gamini denied that such a meeting had ever taken place. “At no point did Ven. Gnanasara Thera met the Cardinal in 2017 and warned him of any possible attack. “However, during a meeting with the Cardinal he had raised the issue of Muslim expansionism only. Therefore, we very responsibly state that until the point of the Easter attacks, no one had met with the Cardinal or warned him in any manner regarding an imminent attack on the Catholic Church,” he said.
