About 500 families in Behenella, Pelana, Ballahela, Pahalagama, Delgastenna and Kahatapanawa in the Deraniyagala Divisional Secretariat Division undergo severe difficulties when they cross a river on an old boat, which is the only way they have to reach the surroundings areas.
They have to cross the river to reach the Thaligama Hospital, Post Office and Ingiriyawatta Vidyalaya where most of their children attend. They now cross the river on a raft. On rainy days, they go on foot to Thaligama and cross the bridge there to reach the school. It is a 3 km journey, they said.
Schoolchildren more often have faced fatal accidents when they were crossing the river on the dilapidated boat. One day, they will not be so fortunate to escape from such an accident, they said.
Therefore, they urge the relevant authorities to set up at least a wire bridge over the river and provide them with a new ferry as well.
