Amaradeva Asapuwa to be constructed

Media Minister Dullas Alahapperumahas pledged that he would go ahead with the construction work of the proposed 'W.D. Amaradeva Asapuwa’ centre which has been neglected and overgrown with weeds due to the poor attention of the relevant officials.

According to authorities the construction work of the 'Amaradeva Asapuwa' began on August 28, 2017 by a private company and was later abandoned citing various reasons.

It is said that the importance of establishing this 'Asapuwa' was proposed by the late musician Pandit Amaradewa and accordingly the construction work was commenced on land at the Apegama village premises, Battaramulla with a cost of Rs. 200 million.

W.D. Amaradeva had been recognized as one of the country's greatest musicians who rendered a valuable service to the music industry for several decades. During his illustrious career he was awarded with a number of local and international awards.

Late Amaradeva’s objective of establishing this centre was to assist Sri Lankan children learning oriental music as currently some of them receive their music education from the Shanthi Nikethan in India.

Amaradeva had planned to establish a library, a study room, a fully-fledged music studio, open air theatre, a conference hall and many more in the centre.

After the demise of this music maestro, the then Government had a plan to place he and his wife Wimala Amaradeva's ashes at this Asapuwa which is currently in a private funeral parlour.

Buddhasasana and Cultural Affairs Ministry Secretary Prof. Kapila Gunawardana said the Government has taken steps to commence the construction work of the ‘Amaradeva Asapuwa‘ with the help of Sri Lanka Navy next year.
