Priority to protecting children’s rights - Prime Minister

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said giving priority to protecting children’s rights is a great duty of all human kind, while adding good wishes on behalf of the celebration of “World Children’s Day”, falling today, October 1.

“It is because of children that the world becomes beautiful. At the same time, the future of a country and world depends on the generation of children.

Their world is far more wonderful than the world of adults. Providing them with that wonder without any barriers is a responsibility of adults.

“Realising this, as a government, we are always committed towards confirming children’s rights. Our belief is that a generation of children with good qualities and wisdom will eradicate the darkness of the future. We have pledged this even through the manifesto, Saubaghyaye Dekma. Accordingly, being able to amend several acts to make school education compulsory and to distance child domestic service from society is an achievement for us.

“Due to the Covid pandemic, the childhood of children of other countries as well as ours has become extremely complex. It is no secret that children being deprived of the freedom of running and playing and being restricted to their homes is stressful for them. Therefore, during a time when a pandemic exists, I request parents and elders to make an effort to care for children in a manner that does not subject them to mental stress.

“The government has already commenced Covid immunity vaccinations required for children and it is the government’s aspiration to end it soon while giving priority to children with special needs.

It is commendable that the Women and Child Development, Pre-schools and Primary Education, School Infrastructure and Education Services Ministry together with the Department of Probation and Childcare Services has provided an opportunity on behalf of World Children’s Day to highlight children’s creations.“I request that everyone should commit themselves to making a success of the goals of World Children’s Day in Sri Lanka which is being meaningfully commemorated under the theme “Children before everything” this time. Let us make the children’s world beautiful,”the Prime Minister said in his message.
