UNP to begin membership drive

UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara yesterday said that recruitment of new members to the United National Party (UNP) will be carried out in three stages.

He made this comment while expressing his views to the media yesterday (01).

The methods to be used are issuing Rs. 1,000 membership cards, issuing membership cards online and the general method of recruiting members at village level.

The recruitment of members to the party which was planned to begin on October 1 has been rescheduled to October 20, the birthday of UNP founder and first Prime Minister of the country D.S. Senanayake. Under this programme, the registration of existing members will also be renewed and an opportunity will be provided to renew membership using one of these three stages. Range Bandara said that this programme will be carried out in every village from Point Pedro to Dondra Head.

The General Secretary of the UNP also said that under the prevailing Corona pandemic, new member recruitment will be carried out online and using social media. Youth groups will be organized through Zoom, Facebook and Tik Tok.

He pointed out that the digital identity card can be kept on a mobile phone and that a colour such as gold, silver, platinum will be given to these cards depending on member activities engaged in and donations made. He said further that, based on the number appearing on the card, a member of the UNP from Jaffna can visit Hambantota without a letter from a top official of the party and will be able to interact with a UNP Party authority there and that a QR code will also be included in the identity card.

Range Bandara who said that arrangements will be made to provide these identity cards to members of organizations affiliated to the Party such as Lak Vanitha. Jathika Yovun Peramuna and members of professional organizations. He mentioned that activities of every member will be estimated through an App and that activities such as organization of meetings, recruitment of members and participating in party meetings will be evaluated through the App as well. If members engage in an anti-social activity which will have an impact on the party, a note will be added in connection with the incident and the UNP will move forward as a disciplined party. He said further that the membership card will be used as a mirror to identify the member and that the party will act to care and safeguard the member. Range Bandara said that members who work for the party will not have an opportunity in the future to allege that they did not receive any opportunities.
