Landslide warning issued

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued level 1 (yellow) landslide warning has been issued for parts of Galle, Kalutara, Kegalle and Ratnapura. They are:

●. Galle - Nagoda, Neluwa and Elpitiya Divisional Secretariat Division(s) (DSD) and surrounding areas.

●. Kalutara - Bulathsinhala and Palindanuwara Divisional Secretariat Division(s) (DSD) and surrounding areas.

●. Kegalle - Dehiowita Divisional Secretariat Division(s) (DSD) and surrounding areas.

●. Ratnapura - Eheliyagoda, Imbulpe, Kuruwita, Ratnapura, Elapatha, Nivithigala,bKalawana, Ayagama and Kiriella Divisional Secretariat Division(s) (DSD) and surrounding areas.

Landslide warning for several districts

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) issued ‘Level 1’ landslide early warnings for several areas in the Galle, Kalutara, Kegalle and Ratnapura districts.

Accordingly, residents in Nagoda, Neluwa and Elpitiya Divisional Secretariat Divisions (DSDs) and surrounding areas in the Galle district, Bulathsinhala and Palindanuwara DSDs and surrounding areas in the Kalutara district, Dehiowita DSD and surrounding areas in the Kegalle district and Eheliyagoda, Imbulpe, Kuruwita, Ratnapura, Elapatha, Nivithigala, Kalawana, Ayagama and Kiriella DSDs and surrounding areas have been warned to be watchful on the possibility of landslides slope failures, rock falls, cutting failures and ground subsidence if the rain continues.

People who are living in or are close to all mountainous areas and man made cut slopes within the relevant DSDs have been asked to pay special attention to the warning.

The Meteorology Department issued an Advisory for heavy rain until 11am tomorrow. “Heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, and Southern provinces during the next 24 hours. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm can be expected at some places elsewhere. The public are requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms,” it stated.
