PM urges teachers to resume duties

Teachers are the forerunners who have the hearts to regenerate children’s education which was restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, said Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (06).

The Prime Minister made this observation when he joined in the function held in conjunction with the World Teachers’ Day organized by the Ministry of Education, via video technology to express his good wishes.

“We know that from the past our beloved teachers dedicated themselves to generating well-balanced citizens,” said the Prime Minister. “We greatly appreciate this service you all render on behalf of the entire nation’s tomorrow. We will never be subject to under-estimation, in any way, the task you all engage in as teachers, for the good existence of overall mankind. Therefore, we, as a Government, further ensure the recognition granted to the profession of teaching.”

The Prime Minister said that as a Government which respects teachers they were ready to listen to their fair demands. He requested the teachers to think twice of their dignity and the hard earned respect and engage in the procedure of imparting knowledge to our children.

At a moment when the entire country is helpless in facing the pandemic, we are very well aware of the efforts you all are putting into teaching the digital child who is at home instead of the child who is physically in a classroom.

Although you were engaged in public service, up to now you did not have a proper identity card.

It is for the first time that the Ministry of Education has made arrangements to issue identity cards in parallel to Teachers’ Day.

“We want to do the best for the children who will one day take over in the future,” Premier Rajapaksa said. “We have accepted the challenge of creating Sri Lankan teachers who are suitable for a universal task, on behalf of that. We always appreciate the tasks that everyone is carrying out including the Minister of Education.
