Drug addicts barred from having driving licences

The National Transport Medical Institute (NTMI) will not issue heavy vehicle driving licences hereafter for drug addicts as per the instructions of Vehicle Regulation, Bus Transport Services and Train Compartments and Motor Car Industry State Minister Dilum Amunugama.

Many heavy vehicle drivers who were involved in fatal accidents during the past two years had been drug addicts.

Therefore, NTMI Chairman Dr. Sachindra Gamagae has issued a circular to driving schools in this regard.

About 2,356 fatal accidents have been reported during the past 18 months and most of them were caused by drug addicted drivers.
