Army promotes 567 Officers and 10,368 Other Ranks

Coinciding with the 72nd Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Army, 567 Officers and 10,368 Other Ranks received promotions with the approval of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces on the recommendation of Army Commander and Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva and the Defence Ministry.

Eight Senior Brigadiers were promoted to the rank of Major General, 17 Colonels to the rank of Brigadier, 42 Lieutenant Colonels to the rank of Colonel and 60 Majors to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

In addition, 256 Captains were promoted to the rank of Major, 10 Lieutenants to the rank of Captain, 152 2nd Lieutenants to the rank of Lieutenant and 22 Probation Officers commissioned to the rank of Lieutenant (QM) received the Army Day promotions.

This is the highest number of promotions granted to officers and other ranks in the history of the Army. In the Army’s history of 72 years, such a record number of promotions has never been recorded.

A record number of 3,873 promotions to Officers and 78,707 promotions to Other Ranks including yesterday’s promotions have been granted to-date since General Shavendra Silva took office on August 18, 2019.
