The Maussakelle and Upper Kotmale Reservoirs have begun to overflow since yesterday (11) morning due to heavy rains in the central hills.

The three sluice gates of the Maussakele Reservoir were opened at 06.30 am yesterday (11), said the engineers in charge of the reservoir.

One sluice gate of the Upper Kotmale Reservoir was automatically opened yesterday (11) morning.

With the opening of the sluice gates of the Maskeliya Maussakele Reservoir, the sluice gates of the Canyon, Laxapana and Wimalasurendra reservoirs have also been opened.

The Maussakelle and Castlereagh Reservoirs are the main sources of water for the Laxapana, New Laxapana, Polpitiya, Wimalasurendra and Canyon hydropower plants under the Laxapana Hydro Power Complex, which belongs to the National Hydro Power System.

The Nuwara Eliya District Disaster Management Unit requests the people who use the water below the dams to be vigilant as the water level of the Kelani River could rise rapidly due to the overflowing of these reservoirs.
