Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy, held a felicitation ceremony for the coaches of all sports disciplines who were involved with the students of the school, i.e. Swimming by U H Sugath who coached the Mahamaya girls for the past 20 years, Athletics by Janz Dissanayake who was coaching for over 15 years, Girls Cricket by the writer, Upananda Jayasundera, for the last 36 years(This cricket team became the ‘Best Eight’ teams among Sri lanka Girls Cricket), table tennis by Buddhika Dikkumbura for the past 15 years, Volleyball by S Susantha, Primary School Athletic Coach, D M Gunapala, Hockey Coach, G G Dharmaratne, coaching for over 10 years, Weight Lifting by Srimali Samarakoon, an International women Weight Lifter who is coaching for the past four years, Gymnastics by Amal Rasanga for the last 10 years, Chess by Romesh Weerawardena, first International Chess Master who joined the school recently. This Felicitation was organized by the Old Girls’ Association of the School, co-ordinated by Prefect of Games, Nilu Wijekoon, who was also an Old Girl of the School. At this get-together, the coaches were awarded with Cash Prizes followed with a tea-party following Covid restrictions.

Mahamaya Girls School,Kandy, was established on January, 1932, and the first Principal of the school was Hilda Kularatne who was there till 1937 and Birtha Rodgers Ratwatte was next from 1937 - 1945, Soma Pujitha Gunawardena from 1951 – 1972, Lalitha Fernando from 1972 – 1980, Nita Pilapitiya from 1981-1990, Muriel Subasinghe from 1990 – 1995, I K Ratnayake from 1995 – 2000, B.M. Wijesinghe from 2000-2005, Indra Withanachchi from 2005-2018 and the present Principal is Sashikala Samithanganie Senadheera. A distinguished Old Girl of the School, conducted the proceedings.
