New laws are being drafted to prevent blackmail targeting women, Public Security Minister Rear Admiral (Retired) Dr, Sarath Weerasekara said.

He was speaking at a meeting of the newly appointed three female DIGs and 12 female ASPs.

The Minister requested proposals of the female Police Officers with regard to strengthening laws to prevent incidents of blackmail targeting women.

He also asked their suggestions to create a secure environment for women at public transport and work places.

Minister Weerasekara emphasized the importance of creating a safe and secure society for women and children.

“We need to create a society where women and children can live without doubt and fear.

There cannot be rape or abuse of women or children in such a society,” he added.

The Minister vowed to provide his fullest support to the female Police Officers to create a safe and secure society for women in Sri Lanka.
