Teachers should not hold children to ransom - Chief Adhikarana Sanghanayake

Chief Adhikarana Sanghanayake of Kurunegala District Most Ven. Dunkannawe Vineetha Nayaka Thera yesterday said striking teachers should be asked to leave the teaching profession and instead, should be encouraged to look for other jobs of their preference that offer them higher salaries.

The Nayaka Thera said that teachers who are depriving the children of their right to a sound education should be removed from the teaching profession if they are refusing to perform their duties.

"They should not hold the schoolchildren to ransom," the Nayaka Thera added.

“These teachers who are on strike are earning thousands of rupees by conducting private tuition classes these days at their leisure,” the Nayaka Thera said.

The Nayaka Thera said that scholars who have a genuine interest in teaching and educating should be appointed to Provincial and National schools.

"Insensitive and unpatriotic scholars are not suitable for this noble profession of teaching in Government schools countrywide," the Nayaka Thera said.

“Despite the economic constraints due to COVID-19 pandemic, the Government was ready to provide a reasonable solution to the Government teachers who are on strike since the poor students have now become hostages of the Teacher Trade Unionists.

These students have been deprived of their online teaching sessions for months by now," Most Ven. Dunkannawe Vineetha Nayaka Thera said.
