TNA to protest with farmers, fishermen

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) will hold a protest campaign in the Northern and Eastern Provinces next Sunday and Monday (17 and 18) demanding solutions to problems of farmers and fishermen.

The decision was made at a meeting held on Wednesday. A press statement by the TNA said the protest campaign would be held adhering to quarantine rules and health guidelines currently imposed by the Government.

It stated that many voluntary organizations and political movements would join in the planned series of protests.

Demonstrations will be held in front of the Agrarian Service Centres in the North and the East demanding solutions to fertilizer shortage and problems related to ownership of paddy fields and lands. More demonstrations will be held near fishing jetties in the area highlighting the problem of Indian fishermen coming to Sri Lankan waters and other hardships faced by fishermen.

Fishermen in the North have planned a protest campaign in the sea route from Mullaithivu to Point Pedro next Sunday to express their distress over Indian fishermen’s invasion. The TNA is backing this demonstration as well.
