Veteran journalist Wasantha Priya Ramanayake dies

Veteran journalist and one time Chairman of Associated Newspapers Ceylon Ltd (Lake House) Wasantha Priya Ramanayake passed away yesterday.

Ramanayake born in Unawatuna, Galle obtained his secondary education at G/Vidyaloka College where he was the Head Prefect in 1976. Subsequently he entered the Galle College of Technology for his Diploma in Auditing and Accounting.

On completion of his academic and vocational education he began his career as an auditor at the Internal Audit department of the Building Materials Corporation (BMC). Since his schooling period he was a prolific writer and contributed to publications of the country. During his service period at BMC he served as the Editor of ‘Nivahana’ magazine published by the Corporation.

Later he joined the Government Information Department where he served as the Deputy Editor and later as the Chief Editor of the Desathiya magazine at the time. He retired as Director General of the Government Information Department.

He was a regular writer for national newspapers and earned a high reputation for his series of articles titled Kivida Dekma. Later he published the collection of those articles as book under the same title.

As a political writer he created many interesting news reports, articles, speeches, and other written contents about politics and events, including stories related to government, political leadership, and public opinion. He always advocated and promoted communal harmony.

He was also the Chairman of Lake House for a short period and was the Media Director of former President Maitripala Sirisena.

Remains at “Restpect Home” at No.483, Bauddaloka Mawatha, Colombo 8. Cremation will be heldtoday at 3 pm at the Borella Cemetery.
