Sivathanujan, Movindi, Chenuka and Chenethma emerge chess champions

Sivananthan Sivathanujan of Kokavil Hindu College ,Movindi Herath of Maliyadeva Balika, Chenuka Jayawardena of St Aloysius Galle and Chenethma Marasinghe of Girls High School Kandy emerged champions in their respective divisions of the Sri Lanka Online National Chess Championship concluded yesterday.

In the Northern open division Sivathanujan had an unbeaten record by scoring 6.5 points out of 7 rounds to take the gold medal while Jagatheshan Arthirjan with 5.5 points and Aruthran Arunakirinathan both from Jaffna Hindu College were placed second and third to secure silver and bronze medals .

Meanwhile Movindi Herath was able to win the Gold medal at the North-Western Women’s event .She scored 6 points out of the 7 games ..Ranpali Attanayake of Furguson High School won 5.5 points out of the 7 rounds to win the Silver Medal while Methma Wijesinghe of Sabaragamuwa University was able to win the bronze medal. At the Southern Open event Chenuka Jayawardena of St Aloysius College Galle who scored 6 points out of the 7 games won the Gold medal with a gap of half a point from the Silver medalist Haritha Hansana of Rahula College . The bronze medal was won by Thisal Piyumatha of Dharmasoka College.

At the Central Women’s event, Chanethma Marasinghe came to the limelight with winning the Gold medal . She has taken 5.5 points out of 7 games to came on top slot The Silver medal won by Wishwara Mapa of Girls High School with 5.5 points ( due to tie breaker ) Rashini Herath of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology won the bronze medal.

The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka ( CFSL ) successfully organized this Online Rapid National Chess Championship for the first time
