Govt. determined to make organic farming a success – Minister

Co-Cabinet Spokesman Plantation Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana yesterday said that the Government has implemented a number of programmes to promote tea and other cultivations and urged the people to keep faith in the Government at the initial stage of organic farming.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet media briefing held at the Government Information Department yesterday, Minister Pathirana said that it was natural for various problems to arise during the initial stages of organic farming and invited all farmers, including tea cultivators to work together with the Government to achieve success in organic farming.

The Government led by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa launched the Organic Fertilizer Programme as it was a positive step towards protecting the health of the people. The Minister pointed out that there is a shortage of fertilizer production as this programme is in its infancy and hoped to solve the problem by importing imported fertilizer. However, he said that the problem was due to the lack of quality in the stock of imported fertilizers.

The Minister said that the country will receive a stock of Nitrogen fertilizer for tea cultivation today as well, adding that the Government will provide the required stock of Nitrogen fertilizer within the next month.
