Top Junior athletes in action at Asian Youth Championships

The selection committee of the Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) yesterday decided to include seven new events in the first selection trial for the Asian Youth Athletic Championship to be held on November 13 and14 at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

The 2022 Asian Youth Athletic Championship is scheduled to be held in Kuwait from March 1 - 4 and SLA is planning to select the best juniors from the selection competitions.

However following in the footsteps of previous athletic events the selection trial is aimed at events that have a better chance of qualifying for the Asian Youth Championship in Kuwait next March.

The new events for the selection trial are boys and girls 1500m, Pole Vault, Shot Putt, discus throw, hammer throw,girls five km race walk and boys 10 km race walk.

In addition it was also decided to extend the entries deadline for the events to November 2.

The Vice President of SLA G.L.S Perera said only applicants born in 2005 and 2006 are eligible to apply for the selection trials.

They should give their performance since August 1st 2019 to date.

All applications should be sent to Secretary, Sri Lanka Athletics, No 33 Torrignton Square, Colombo 07 on or before November 2nd. Meanwhile SLA is expected to see high performance of junior athletes for the future International events such as Asian and world athletic meets.

The recently concluded world junior Athletic championship held in Kenya Sri Lanka sent a second string team and got successful results.

Medhani Jayamanne 100m, 200m, Tharushi Karunaratne 800m showed good progress at this meet and Tharushi the product from Walala A.Ratnayake MMV also can take part in junior meet next year too and she is a good prospect for Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile the Sports Minister had successful discussions with Kenya Sports Minister to get coaches for long distance athletes.

Kenya have performed well at the middle distance and long distance events at International meets such as Olympics and world meets and their coaches and their methods are highly successful for local athletes . The athletics Governing Body ,SLA already formed Elite athletes pool to focus on future International events and it is also in good progress said SLA Vice President.

SLA President Major General Palitha Fernando ,Secretary Prema Pinnawala and the officials are making all effort to bring more success for athletes and Sport Ministry and Sports Development Department give their maximum support for their success.

The Sports Ministry already plan to focus untill 2032 and make plans for athletes. Especially under the observation of National sports Council the High Performance Committee is making a great effort and they give their suggestions to SLA for future preparations concluded SLA Vice President G.L S Perera.
