President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa respect farmers who feed people irrespective of race, religion, language and caste. It is easy to criticise the Government in many ways but empowering them is more challenging, said Batticaloa District Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Organiser P. Chandrakumar.

He was speaking at a conference which was held to mark the fifth anniversary of the SLPP at the Agriculture Extension Office, Mandapathady in the Vavunativu Secretariat Division under the theme “Vision of Prosperity to the Nation” yesterday (2).

At the event, 100 beneficiaries of the Saubhagya home garden programme received a variety of vegetable seeds from Agriculture Development Officer K. Uthayakumar.

SLPP Organiser Chandrakumar said the sustainable home gardening development project is one of the milestones in their programme. “We have a big hope that cultivation in the Vavunativu area will prosper. We shall provide all facilities to cultivators to make a living. The Opposition is making a big hue and cry over the high cost of living that is inevitable due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In two months, after the Budget is introduced, the price of things will become normal,” he said.

“With utmost respect to cultivators, the President and Prime Minister were the first to reduce the prices of manure and fertilizers. The cultivators are the backbone of the country and though the present situation has created some problems for them they all will be resolved soon,” he added.

The agricultural instructors emphasised the use of organic manure and its impact on the nutritional value of vegetables and demonstrations were made on the making of compost fertilizer.
