Eastern Province Governor Anuradha Yahampath said that the future of the children must not be ruined by their elders by misusing public funds.

The Governor was addressing the Trincomalee District Progress Review Meeting of the Wewgam Pubuduwa Project at the Governor’s Secretariat on Wednesday (3) morning.

Leaders of the Morawewa and Gomarankadawala Farmers’ Associations who were present at the meeting alleged that the project was snailing at present.

The Governor said that the contractors who were carrying out construction work without proper standards should be removed immediately and new ones should be re-selected properly.

“We have to make use of every penny we receive from foreign countries,” she said.

“This project has been started four years ago. Farmers alleged that the work is very slow. We had enough water in the past. The intelligent people of that time used water sparingly. These lakes had been built by our ancestors. But they have been ruined now in the guise of conservation. We have to find ways to restore them and even build new ones,” the Governor said.

Provincial Chief Secretary P. Thusitha, Irrigation Ministry Secretary Kalamathi Padmaraja Wanigasinghe, Wewgam Pubuduwa Project Director, Provincial Irrigation Department Officers, Pradeshiya Sabha Members, Agrarian Association Representatives and others were present.
