Gold digging: Minister’s Personal Secretary suspended

Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera has ordered the Ministry Secretary to immediately suspend the Secretary, who has been accused of attempting to secretly recover a stock of gold allegedly buried in Puthukudirippu in the Mullaitivu district during the war and to carry out an investigation.

Minister Weerasekera said that only this officer has been charged so far and had instructed him to resign in order to conduct an independent investigation.

Police are investigating two secretaries in the personal staff of two Cabinet Ministers and have handed over further investigations to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

A stock of gold allegedly buried during the war, by the LTTE in the Puthukudirippu area was due to be recovered on November 25 as per a court order. Excavations in this area will begin today (2) and police security had been deployed to the site as well.
