Booster dose prevented spread of Omicron variant - State Minister

Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Minister Prof.Channa Jayasumana said the prompt decision taken by the government to jab a third booster dose of the COVID vaccine prevented the spread of the Omicron variant in Sri Lanka.

He said that the Omicron variant is becoming a serious threat in the United States and European countries and that such a situation did not arise in Sri Lanka due to the third dose of booster dose being given three months after the second dose of COVID vaccine in Sri Lanka.

The Minister of State said that the spread of the corona virus in Sri Lanka largely has been curtailed due to the decision taken by the government to provide Pfizer vaccine as the third dose at a time when many raised issues over it. He was speaking to the media in Anuradhapura yesterday.

The State Minister said that by Saturday evening, four million seven thousand three hundred and fifty people had been vaccinated with the booster dose. He said that in order to prevent the spread of Omicron in Sri Lanka, all those who have taken the second dose should take the third dose.
