Eighteen road deaths on January 1

A total of 18 deaths caused by traffic accidents were reported on January 1, said Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa

According to him, of them eight deaths are due to the accidents that took place on the same day and the rest are due to the accidents that took place on previous days.

These accidents were reported from Negombo, Mulliaveli, Habarana, Habaraduwa, Vavuniya, Homagama and Pinnawala areas.

A 10-year-old child and two youths of ages 19 and 22 are also among the deceased, police said.

Meanwhile, a couple is reported dead at Bandaragama area in the early morning of Sunday after the bike they were riding hit the railing of the road due to the high speed.

The deceased are in the ages of 21 and 19 and are residents of Bandaragama and Kandy. Police are investigating.
