All should unite to fulfill their duties, responsibilities – Speaker

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said that all should unite to fulfill their duties and responsibilities for the country. He said that the country has endured many challenges during the last two years and the New Year, too, is quite challenging.

The Speaker was addressing the Oath/Affirmation of the Public Service event of Parliament for 2022 at the Parliament Complex yesterday.

After hoisting the National Flag by the Speaker at the main steps in front of the Parliament Complex, the Parliament Staff proceeded forth with the Oath/Affirmation of the Public Service event initiating duties for the year.

A two-minutes' silence was observed thereafter to commemorate all those who sacrificed their lives for the country, including War Heroes.

Parliament Secretary General Dhammika Dasanayake said that Parliament overcame the challenges of 2021 and the Secretary-General said that all must work together to overcome the challenges of this year. He said that it was due to the commitment and responsibility of the citizens that the country was able to overcome the challenges of the last year.

The Secretary General also said that the high professionalism of the Parliamentary Officials in facilitating the business of Parliament enable them to carry out parliamentary affairs with ease.

Parliamentary Medical Centre Medical Officer Dr. T. R Pathirana said that that the COVID-19 situation can be overcome with good health habits. The doctor said that maintaining social distance, wearing masks and washing hands frequently with soap are important practices in this regard.

Deputy Speaker Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Deputy Secretary General, Chief of Staff Kushani Rohanadeera, Assistant Secretary General Tikiri K. Jayatilake, Department Heads, Parliament Staff and affiliated staff were present.
