Former WP Governor Alavi Moulana remembered

Former Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana was remembered on January 1, Saturday in Colombo on his 90th birth anniversary.

The event was organised by his two sons Nakeeb and Najeeb and it was attended by invitees including religious scholars and ministers.

The guests included Justice Minister Ali Sabry, PC, Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, State Minister Tissa Witharana, George Stuart and Company Group Chairman Dilith Jayaweera and former Western Province Chief Minister Isuru Devapriya, First Secretary at the Saudi embassy in Colombo Dr. Khalid Al-Makki, President’s Counsels Faisz Mustapha and Razick Zarook, and former Minister A.H.M Fowzie.

Former President Chandrika Kumaratunga has regretted her inability to attend the event. Her message was read out to the audience.

Minister Sabry, PC said that the late Moulana will remain afresh in the minds of the people because of his dedicated services to the nation irrespective of faiths, races or religion. “He stood for the down-trodden and fought for the rights and worked for national unity.

He was a firm believer that the economy is important for a country more than anything else,” the Minister said.

In her message, former President Chandrika Kumaratunga described the late Moulana as an exceptional person. He had immense courage, even in the face of life-threatening challenges.

He suffered much for his Party and the causes he espoused, even facing physical attacks. He always stood for National Unity and Harmony among all Sri Lankans,” she said recalling his life as a good Muslim and a great Sri Lankan.

“I salute the memory of my dear friend and colleague Alavi Moulana. We need leaders of the calibre of Alavi Moulana in this age when such are extremely rare in our country and our Party,” former President stated in her message. The programme was compered by Inthiqab Zufer Moulana.
