12-member Lankan team for SAAF Cross Country C’ships

Sri Lankan 12 member athletic team will take part at the SAAF Cross Country Championships which scheduled to be held in Kohima, Nagaland, India on January 15th .

The athletes who took part at the recently concluded Cross Country trails held at Diyagama have selected athletes based on their performances said Vice President of Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) G.L.S Perera.

The four categories open men and women (10km) and Junior men and women (6km) included for this Cross Country championship and South Asian region athletes are expected to take part at this event.

Three Army soldiers R.M.S Pushpakumara, G.M.G.S.R. Wijewickrama and K. Shanmugeswaran will take part at the open men’s 10km event. Pushpakumra who won the trials with 32 minutes and 09 seconds while second and third places won by Wijewickrama and Shanmugeswaran to qualify for the SAAF Cross country Championships.

Meanwhile Madumali Perera of Sri Lanka Navy who finished trials first with 38 minutes and 22 seconds with Chamini Herath and W.M Nimesha will compete for the open women’s’ (10km)event.

Meanwhile W. M. Kasuni (Wickramabhahu Central College, Gampola) G. W. O. N. Fonseka(Nimala Maria Balika Maha Vidyalaya, Thudella) Hashini Lakshani(Gavitadeniya Maha Vidyalaya, Galle) will represent for the junior women (6km) event. Jaliya Sageeth, Dulaksha Madushan (Gampaha Bandaranayake Vidyalaya) Angelo Benedict (Lyceum International School) and N. B. S. C.P. Madubhashana (Yahala Rahula Vidyalaya) will compete for the junior men’s (6km ) event.

All these juniors were able to finished first three places at the recently concluded trials conducted by SLA. Especially this is going to be good opportunity for the young athletes to gain international experience.

H. A. Upali will accompany the team as Manager while T. A. P. Madura Perera will join as coach. H. B. Achintha Nirmani will be the Lady Chaperone.
