The Government will not take the country to a military rule, United People’s Alliance and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said.

He was speaking at a media briefing at the Vavuniya Media Centre yesterday.

He said that the United People's Power (UPP) was formed to unveil an unprecedented political chapter in the country. “It is an organisation for the future of the country and to move the country forward sans this deal political culture. It is not for an individual or a race. All those who want to take the country forward can join it. Our aim is to form a government free of corruption and looting,” the Opposition leader said.

“They removed State Minister Susil Premajayantha just like a pillow for a headache. The Government did not use the opportunity given by the people properly. This needs to be changed. We need to form a new people’s power. The people should be given the opportunity for us in this regard,” the Opposition leader said.

He said that in the North and East, a housing project launched during the last government was inaugurated with the participation of the people. “In this way, how can they provide housing schemes to the people? We will provide a permanent solution to the housing issue of the people when we come to the power,” he said.

He also said that the media is the greatest force that defends democracy. “It is the duty of the journalist to reveal the truth to the people. Many of the journalists who revealed the facts in this way are facing unexpected troubles. When we come to power, we will give the best we can to the affected journalists,” the Opposition Leader said.

He said that the journey of the UPP to the country continues. “In this journey, there is no such thing as Northern politics, or Southern politics. There are no divisions. We will work for the citizens. We will resolve people’s problems step by step,” he said. “Military leadership is for the military. Our country is a democratic country. All that is needed to lead a democratic country is a democratic election, with the votes of the people and the elected representatives. Military guidance is unnecessary. I do not think this Government will have any intention of taking the country to a military rule,” the Opposition Leader said.

He also said that his party will not allow ethnic and religious divisions to emerge. “We will be the children of our motherland. We need only to move this country forward,” the Opposition Leader added.
