Danushka Gunathilaka retires from Test Cricket

Sri Lanka cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka has informed Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) of his decision to retire from Test cricket.

Gunathilaka the 30-year-old left hander is currently banned from International Cricket until June after being found guilty of having breached the bio-bubble while on tour to England in June Gunathilaka who has played 8 test matches for Sri Lanka, had handed in his letter of retirement to the SLC last week. He played his last test against New Zealand in December 2018 and after that never got a chance to play Test cricket. He has scored 299 runs with two fifties in his eight test career.

Danushka Gunathilaka has stated in his letter that he has taken the decision after evaluating all aspects and especially in order to focus on his fitness levels for the shorter versions of the game.

Despite retiring from Test cricket, Gunathilaka has said that he would like to continue to play international and domestic matches of the shorter versions.

“It has always been an honour to play for my country and I hope to contribute to the best of my ability in the future by continuing to represent Sri Lanka whenever I am called upon to do so,” he said.

Gunathilaka was in good form during last LPL with back to back fifties and his last fifty came in just 19 balls at the LPL final (D.R.)
