New economic revival programme to be launched - State Minister

Samurdhi, Household Economy Microfinance Self-Employment and Business Development State Minister Shehan Semasinghe said that a new islandwide economic revival programme will be launched by the second quarter of this year.

“Despite the global economic crisis, the objective of this programme is to strengthen the Sri Lankan economy by encouraging local production,” the State Minister said.

He was speaking at the opening of the Central and Uva Provincial Trade Forum and Market Exhibition at the Kandy City Centre in Kandy on Saturday.

He said that the Government has allocated over Rs.110 billion for rural economic development this year and 40 percent of it will be allocated for the development of small and medium scale industries.

Semasinghe said the aim of this economic revival programme is to strengthen the economy of small and medium scale producers, who contribute 52 per cent of the country’s GDP and strengthen the overall economy.
