Jumbo twins, another named at Pinnawala

The twin male baby elephants, born at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage four months ago, have been named “Disa” and “Sajjana” at a ceremony on Tuesday.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage Assistant Curator Sameera Rathnayake told the Daily News yesterday that another female baby elephant born on September 10 was named “Neelamani” during the same event. In a rare occurrence, the Orphanage witnessed the birth of twin baby elephants to a female elephant named ‘Surangi’ on August 31 last year.

Female elephant calf “Neelamani’s mother is ‘’Rajina”. A male elephant named “Pandu” has fathered these three elephant calves.

Rathnayake said the naming of elephant calves was done at a simple ceremony presided by National Zoological Gardens Department Director-General Sharmila Rajapaksha. He said the Orphanage is open to the public these days, and the twin baby elephants could be viewed from 10am to 12 noon. “Neelamani” could be viewed with the rest of the herd from 8.30am to 4pm.
