A World Bank funded programme to empower residents of the Anuradhapura District will be launched shortly. A World Bank delegation including World Bank Country Director for Sir Lanka Nepal and Maldives Faris Hadad-Zervos and Maldives and Sri Lanka Country Manager Chiyo Kanda recently visited Anuradhapura to hold a discussion with the Anuradhapura Government Agent Janaka Jayasundara and Senior District and Divisional Executive Officials on the framework of the programme.

Healthcare, education and social welfare facilities in rural areas will be developed under the programme while creating opportunities for self-employment.

During the discussion, the Anuradhapura Government Agent explained to the World Bank delegation the present development mechanism in the district. Anuradhapura Additional Government Agent Vijaya Wanasinghe, Divisional Secretaries and Heads of Departments were present. They agreed to identify the prospective development components and drafting proposals as an initiative basis for realising the Project.

Canadian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka David McKinon and Political Counsellor of the High Commission of Canada in Sri Lanka Daniel Bood also called on the Anuradhapura Government Agent at the Anuradhapura Districts Secretariat recently. The High Commissioner informed the Government Agent that the High Commission will support to enhance the economic growth of the Anuradhapura District and expressed his satisfaction over the present development activities in the district.
