Poultry farmers leave industry

All Island Farmers’ Association National Organizer Namal Karunarathna said at a media briefing in Wilgoda, Kurunegala that small-scale poultry farmers had left their industries due to the shortage of feed and maize supplies.

He said that the shortage of chicken and eggs would also be a major blow to hotel and tourism industries. “If the Government cannot find a solution to feed the animals, there will be a massive downfall in poultry production,” he added. He said that people were eating more chicken because of the high price of vegetables.

During the media briefing, Karunarathna further stated that vegetable prices have also increased by a large percentage due to the breakdown of fertilizer supplies.
