Foreign Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said that this year Sri Lankan workers will have new employment opportunities in many countries including South Korea, Thailand and Japan.
The Minister said that South Korea had announced that it would increase the employment quota for Sri Lankan workers this year and that the Government was preparing to make an official statement in February.
Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris was speaking to the media recently after receiving blessings from Asgiriya Chapter Anunayake Ven. Anamaduwe Dhammadassi Thera.
“It is very important for our economy to have more employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers abroad and the Government was very pleased with the way Sri Lankan workers are working in South Korea,” the Minister said.
The Minister said that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the friendship between Sri Lanka and Japan and a number of events are being jointly organised by the External Affairs Ministry and the Embassy of Japan to commemorate the occasion.
Minister Prof. Peiris said that learning not only English but also Japanese, Chinese and Korean is very important to get good jobs in the international arena and that the Korean language has now been added to the school curriculum in Sri Lanka.
