Sachitha – the ruggerite turned cricketer

Sachitha Jayathilake played school cricket as an all rounder for his alma mater S.Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia. He captained the Thomian 1st XI Cricket team in 2016 at the Inter-School tournament and went on to represent the Sri Lanka national under 19 Cricket team in 2015 and 2016 under Charith Asalanka. He represented LPL team Dambulla Giants at the second edition in 2021. At present he is playing for Sebastianites CC in the premier tournament.

Speaking exclusively to Daily News, Sachitha said “It is in my genes, I am very much an outdoor person and since my childhood I have always been taking part in various sporting activities Athletics, Swimming, Water polo, Rugby and my favourite sport is Cricket, which actually made me enter the world of sport “.

“There have been many who have been encouraging me throughout, my loving parents, teachers during my school days, the coaches who have coached me in various sports, my cousin brother and my beloved uncle have always supported and stood by me during both good and bad times”.

“I was fascinated with cricket from the very first time I saw a cricket match and I have always aspired to play the game at the highest level and represent my country one day. Cricket is in my DNA, and I love the sport and that’s the reason why I chose cricket”. “Being a cricketer is never easy. It takes plenty of commitment, sacrifice, dedication, and continuous hard work”. “It has been bitter and sweet, and I have accepted both with grace along the way having learnt a lot in both victory and defeat. Each achievement has been a milestone in my journey, and I am satisfied with my achievements thus far, but I am yet to get to my destination”. “My favourite cricketer is Kieran Pollard and whenever I have free time I Spend time with my friends and Wild life”.

“Winning the All Island Under 17 cricket tournament in 2013 representing my school and being named the Man of the match by scoring 72 runs and Captaining the college 1st X1 team in 2016 which is a very prestigious achievement and playing for the Lankan Premier League in 2021.. Thus far those are my most unforgettable incidents in life and to date I really cherish those moments”.

“I would say my top priorities are Honesty, Integrity, accountability and commitment. Also my favourite holiday destination would be Australia”. “Belief is everything, I believe in myself, and in my ability and I work extremely hard all the time to excel in what I do as a sportsman and the ongoing pandemic has taught me the uncertainties in life and to cherish, enjoy and live for the moment”. “I try not to compare myself with anyone; we all have our individuality however I always try to learn from everyone and everything I see”.

“My best compliment was a pat on the back or a simple “well done” after a good effort in the field”.

“My greatest accomplishments in life are obtaining College colours in three main sports, Cricket, Rugby, Water polo and representing Sri Lanka in Under 19 cricket and the National Water polo team”. “I have really not had any embarrassing moments as such, but there have been many lessons I have learnt as to what not to do.” “In life I like to describe myself as a person with determination and confidence.

“I have always aspired to represent Sri Lanka in cricket. I also would like to coach and impart my knowledge with younger sportsmen and women whenever I can. I have been doing professional studies in Sports science and physical management to complement my playing experience and to achieve an overall knowledge as a professional sportsman”. “I want to be an exemplary Sri Lankan cricketer. That’s the kind of legacy I would like to be remembered for” concluded Sachitha Jayathilake.
