CI remanded for killing woman in road accident

Galle Chief Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela yesterday (27) remanded a Chief Inspector of Police who was produced before a court for allegedly causing death of a woman in a road accident, until February 9.

The suspect Chief Inspector (57)was attached to the Ambalangoda Police and a resident of Matara.

He had been returning from work on January 24 when his motorcycle had knocked down a woman was had been on the roadside in Thalpe in the Habaraduwa police division at around 7 pm. The woman died on January 26 after being admitted to the Karapitiya hospital with serious injuries.

The victim was a 72 year old woman residing at Unawatuna.

The CI had also telephoned police stating that he too had been injured after the accident and later it had been revealed that he had not sustained any serious injuries and did not have a licence, the police submitted before the Magistrate in the prosecution.

SI Wimal prosecuted following instructions of Habaraduwa Police OIC CI Ashoka Karuanrathne.
