‘People in a vulnerable categories at risk from Omicron variant’

Health Authorities have warned that the COVID-19 Omicron variant may not have a significant impact on healthy people, but its high incidence rate places people in a vulnerable categories in a dangerous situation.

Although the highly contagious Omicron variant appears to be less severe than the Delta variant, it shouldn’t be categorized as “mild” because people who are unvaccinated or who have underlying conditions or diseases are still most at risk for serious illness.

Speaking to the media, Deputy Director General of Health Services Dr.Hemantha Herath said that adults with pre-existing health conditions could be at risk of developing coronavirus-related complications and could even lead to death even if they have received the booster vaccine.

It is important for adults and people with critical illnesses to seek medical treatment immediately after being infected with Omicron.

The Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry yesterday confirmed that another 10,001 coronavirus patients have recovered and have been discharged from hospitals and intermediate treatment centres.

Accordingly, the total number of recoveries increased to 607,119 while around 13,724 patients infected with the virus are currently undergoing treatment island-wide.
