Sabaragamuwa clear first hurdle

Sabaragamuwa cleared the first hurdle when they edged out Southern Province 1 goal to nil in the semi-final of the Ceylon Provincial League Tournament played for the Independence Trophy at District Sports Complex grounds in Galle yesterday.

After a barren score sheet in the first half, the winners changed their tactics in an attempt to break the deadlock in the second half, to win the first leg and keeping their hopes alive of qualifying for the finals.

A team with only a single national player (Mohamed Shifan) in their ranks strove hard from the start against another young side at their home ground. After changing gears with an offensive playing mode, the under-21 striker A.H.M. Mushfik's spectacular goal in the 60 minute saw them home which eventually put them one up in the competition. The second leg is scheduled to be played on 2 March at their home venue at Seevali grounds, Ratnapura.

Today the strong Northern team will take on Eastern at Durayappa Stadium in Jaffna in the second semi-final at 3.30 p.m.
