Majority endorsed Sri Lanka’s position at UNHRC - Minister

Foreign Minister Prof.G.L.Peiris yesterday said that efforts of his delegation and the officials of overseas missions resulted in Sri Lanka’s position being endorsed by the majority of the international community.

The Foreign Minister while addressing a press conference said that 31 out of 45 countries endorsed the Sri Lanka’s position at the UNHRC’s International dialogue on Sri Lanka and it is a very considerable triumph.

“Thirty one countries found that what we said to them convincing and they expressed their support and their understanding the situation and their encouragement to the government of Sri Lanka to continue”, Professor Peiris said. Addressing a press conference at the SLPP headquarters, the Foreign Minister added that the Sri Lankan delegation led by him managed to make them properly aware of the how Sri Lanka is taking up with regard to issues that are being discussed at the UNHRC.

“We indicated the measures we have taken, the progress we have achieved, where we are today, what is our trajectory for the future and what is our road map with regard to all these matters”, he said. He said that Sri Lanka succeeded in providing clear and succinct explanation to the international community.

“This was possible due the concerted effort of all delegates, Sri Lankan representative and the staff in Geneva and ambassadors and the High Commissioners of relevant countries”, he said. The Foreign Minister said that he raised five basic points at the interactive diagoue.
