‘Electric Fences to be fortified with trenches to mitigate Human-Elephant Conflict’

Disaster Management State Ministry Secretary Major General (Rtd.) Palittha Fernando said that trenches will be excavated alongside electric fences as the latter alone might not be sufficient to mitigate the human-elephant conflict.

He was addressing the District Electric Fence Construction Progress Review Meeting at the Anuradhapura District Secretariat recently.

The State Ministry Secretary also said that constructing electric fence in the Ampara District was completed successfully assisted by Air Force and Naval personnel. “The Army Engineering Corps will assist constructing the electric fence in the Anuradhapura District,” he said.

“Jute lime will also be grown along the fences as barriers for wild elephants. The approval of provincial agrarian and irrigation authorities will be obtained in this regard. Assistance of the Multi-purpose Development Task Force will be sought to accelerate the programme, Major General (Rtd.) Palitha Fernando said. Anuradhapura Government Agent Janaka Jayasundara, State Minister Additional Secretary Deepal Siribanddhana, Anuradhapura Additional Secretaries Vijaya Wanaisnghe, Sandya Abeysekara, Chief Accountant U.S. Aruna Ravi, and Army and Civil Security Department Divisional heads were present.
