‘Protests will only worsen economic crisis’

Chief Government Whip, Public Security and Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said yesterday that solutions for the economic crisis cannot be found by demonstrations and they will only worsen the prevailing crisis. “Therefore, those who protest against the Government should realize this,” he said.

He further said the Government can be changed only according to the Constitution. Demonstrations calling for the Government to resign, ouster of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and engaging in violence are not answers for this issue. “This will result in the country falling further into an abyss,” he said.

“There has been a sharp reduction in tourist arrivals to this country due to this crisis situation in the country. We need to strengthen the Tourism industry which is one of largest foreign exchange earners to the country. However, tourists will avoid visiting destinations if they consider it risky. Therefore, firstly we have to make the country free of violence and struggles,” he added.
